Work Experience Students find out about an Interesting Project
Cockermouth School pupil Joe Davidson and Stainburn School student Bradley Haughin who were both visiting Impact Housing Association on work experience were very intrigued by the new Go4it Project. The Go4it Project Development Manager, Hayley McKay said that “The idea of Go4it is to let young people (in years 7 to 11) look at their skills and talents and believe they can achieve anything they want to. They will have an insight of what it is like to be in a working environment and for them to experience first-hand what their ideal job would be like also to see the steps they must take to reach their goals.
Joe and Bradley were set the task of interviewing Hayley to find out the answers to their questions:
When Joe asked Hayley “Where will the sessions be held?”
Hayley Replied: “At the moment we have two local schools ready to be involved, Southfield Technology College in Workington and St. Benedict’s Catholic High School in Whitehaven. But over the next few years we hope to expand across West Cumbria. The young people will be connecting with local businesses to see how they work as well as what they must do to have a career in that field of work.”
Hayley continued to say. “Go4it will allow young people find out what their dream job is like and the steps they need to take to reach their goal. Along the way they will improve their communication skills as well as building up their self-confidence and self-esteem.
Bradley asked “What impact will it have on the children and their attitudes towards work?”
She answered, ”Go4it will have a big impact on the young people and they will be full of excitement. Go4it is all about showing the young people that they can be whatever they want to be whether they want to be a nuclear scientist, a solicitor, a vet or anything at all.
They also asked Hayley: “What activities does it involve?”
She answered: “It will involve trips to the University of Cumbria. Also it will include acitivites for young people to find their own personal skills and talents.” She also stated that “We hope to provide more activities in the future as the project grows. Everyone will make their own personal plans which will help them plot the necessary steps to attain their dream job.”
Overall Brad and Joe thought that the Go4It project was a very innovative idea. And that it will be very helpful to young people that are starting to think about what they want to do in life. “Some people in my year still don’t know what they want to do when they leave school and this scheme will help provide an idea to those who aren’t sure” said Joe.
