At the start of April 2004, Impact took over The Granary in Ulverston. The Granary was a Christian-based charity, providing accommodation and advice for homelessness people in and around the town. They owned one seven-bedded house in the town and had management agreements with several local private landlords - in total providing accommodation for up to 20 single people. They also provided a drop-in centre for their clients and for people seeking housing advice. The local shop mobility scheme was also operated from their premises.
Since Impact has taken over the project, the office has been moved to newly renovated premises at The New Granary Centre at 2 The Weint (behind The Grapes public house), where we continue to provided a daily drop-in centre for our clients and also we provide housing advice to members of the public - especially homeless people or those at risk of homelessness.
Plans are in hand to renovate the house previously owned by The Granary at Quay Street to bring the standard of accommodation up to a much higher standard. Impact continues to work with local landlords to provide affordable accommodation for its clients in the town.
Impact, in partnership with South Lakeland District Council, has just completed an emergency accommodation project for homeless people in Little Union Street - this will provide six bedrooms for homeless people while their housing needs can be assessed by the Council and suitable move on accommodation found for them.
Impact's clients in Ulverston are varied and widespread - they range from teenagers still completing their education through to senior citizens.
Three members of staff currently work in Ulverston; Neil Ward, who manages Impact's supported housing projects in the South of Cumbria, and David Harris and Lorraine Lambton, who are housing support workers, providing clients with the support they require to live as independently as possible and providing housing advice to those requesting it.
