Rugby star inspires local youth

Local Penrith lad, Gary Lamb has made a dramatic transformation thanks to Harlequins Rugby Union star.

Cumbrian born Harlequins rugby player Matt Shields, who plays at the top of the English Premier league, has been working with residents of Impact Housing’s Young People’s Service to deliver gym and circuit sessions and give nutritional advice.  Resident of Impact Housing’s Eden Rural Foyer, Gary Lamb has taken Matt’s advice seriously and used this to help forge a new career for himself.

Gary, aged 23, started attending Matt’s circuit sessions and his talent and passion for fitness was quickly recognised.  He rapidly progressed to leading the sessions under the guidance of Matt and went on to become a qualified gym instructor, personal trainer and Boxercise ™ instructor.

Gary commenced employment last week as the Gym Instructor at Impact Housing’s Oval Centre Gym in Workington and already has queues of customers eager to take part in his sessions.

Gary also volunteers at the newly opened gym for residents at Eden Rural Foyer which was funded by the Big Lottery through the Foyer Federation as part of a Healthy Conversations programme.

“I have been impressed by the commitment from the young people at the Foyer, one person in particular – Gary has really enjoyed the programme, he is an example to everyone, has a great attitude and is very willing to learn. I’m sure he will be a big success in the fitness industry, it was a pleasure to play a small part in helping Gary achieve his goal.”  Matt Shields
