Paw Patrol fun at the park

On Monday 14th November, 43 children and 41 adults braved the winter weather to help us celebrate the opening of the new play park on Wordsworth View, Salterbeck. Children had the chance to burn off some energy on the park, meet Chase from Paw Patrol, then enjoyed a lunch box and some activities indoors! The park was officially opened by the Mayor of Workington, Councillor Joan Wright.

The £39,658 development included improvements to the multi-use games court behind the Oval, in addition to the new play park. This was made possible by funding from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental Ltd), which gave £25,000. Workington Town Council also put forward approximately £12,000, whilst Impact paid the remainder. Our current parent and child activity project, funded by Children in Need, also got involved in the funding process. The group members supported the WREN application by stating why they wanted to see improvements to the old park and what benefits their children would get out of the park being revamped.

Also on Monday 14th, we received news that Children in Need had approved a grant for next year, to continue the parent and child activities we run at the Oval Centre on Salterbeck. The project has been successfully running since 2013 and this new grant will enable the sessions to run in to 2018. The activities give children and parents/ grandparents the opportunity to try new and exciting activities for free in their local community. The group members also get the opportunity to go on offsite visits as a reward for attending the weekly sessions, these have included visits to Walby farm park, Whinlatter and many more!

These kinds of projects are part of the ‘Salterbeck Community Plan’.  There have been some great outcomes already and we are looking to try and make further improvements including redeveloping the Garnet Crescent Park.  We would love residents to get involved, to give us your views, take part, or benefit from what we do.
