A “Chuck it & Sort it” 5 day was held on Salterbeck at the end of August to raise awareness on Environmental issues. All households on Salterbeck received a newsletter and a charity bag to let them know what was happening on the estate.
Skips 3 skips were placed around strategic sites of Salterbeck and were there for a 4 hour period. All three skips were full by the time they were being collected.
Charity Bags for Great North Air Ambulance
We collected around 60 - 70 bags of recycling on behalf of the Great North Air Ambulance. We also had approx 4 pick-ups for people who wanted to recycle furniture via our Centre 47 furniture-recycling scheme.
Litter Picking
Approx 30 volunteers from Salterbeck Youth projects went onto the backfield to litter pick. Around 8 refuse bags of litter were collected. McDonald’s staff also came and joined in. McDonalds donated a picnic to all the volunteers.
Fair trade
We held an energy efficiency afternoon tea (Fair trade) 30+ people attended the afternoon.
Micro-Chipped
Allerdale Dog Wardens held a drop-in session for residents who wanted to have their dogs micro - chipped. Over 52 dogs were chipped.
Planting
B & Q donated 225 daffodil bulbs and some plants to replant in one of Salterbeck’s flower beds. Three volunteers from the youth activity came to help staff and wardens plant the bulbs and plants. These will flower next spring.
Finale
This event was held at the Shore Road Resser. Between 50 and 60 people came to join in the fishing, pond dipping, arts and crafts. We out free refreshments. There were quizzes and questionnaires to be completed and prizes to be won.
There were also various other activities carried out over the 5 days. In total over 300 people had taken part in the week one way or another. This has gone some way to highlight and take part in environment issues/activities.
