Centre 47 is a project based at 47 Nelson Street, Denton Holme, Carlisle and has been developed by Impact Housing as a gradual growing scheme working with young people. The site was purchased in 1999 and has developed over the last 4 years to what it is today. The Centre works with and supports young people mainly aged 16-25 providing links to training and on the job work experience in a variety of different projects.
- Cumbria Furniture Services (CFS): this project has been operating since 1995 and basically collects donated furniture, refurbishes were necessary and makes the furniture available to people on low incomes. Trainees work in the CFS project on warehouse work, delivery, collections and sales/administration. The project covers an area within a 30 mile radius of Carlisle. As well as furniture CFS recycle bikes, mobile phones, computers and many pieces of bric a brac.
- Center Parcs: The CFS project works closely with Center Parcs, Penrith in collecting furniture as and when they refurbish the 700 lodges based in the Center. The furniture is normally only 4/5 years old and gives us an increased range of furniture to distribute.
- Café – Hubbub: A new café project started during early 2004. The café works with young people interested in the catering industry. It provides a semi commercial café open to young people, visitors, staff, customers to the other projects and the general public. The café also provides training in healthy living and links to fresh food via the food co-op.
- Food Co-op: Centre 47 is part of a growing number of food co-ops providing fresh fruit and vegetables to those who wish to order at £2-00 per bag. All orders need to be received by Tuesday 4-00pm and collected on Thursday pm. The Food Co-op is supported by the Countryside Alliance and is helping to develop people’s way of life to eat healthy food.
- New Deal and Entry to Employment (E2E): All the projects at Centre 47 are providing training and work experience for placements via New Deal and E2E.
- Training: This varies depending on individual needs from Basic Life Skills, Entry to employment, Health and Safety, first aid, and customer care to wider ranges of technical training in Business Studies, IT and many other areas.
- Employment: There are activities to guide and support people seeking employment with job search. We have practical areas for work experience and also network with local businesses to find employment.
- Housing: During 2000 we constructed 10 flats which are occupied by young people supported by non residential staff. Residents can stay for a maximum of three years preparing for total independent living and employment. They will have a commitment to take part in Centre 47 activities. The project also links into Impacts supported accommodation across the city.
-
Office Accommodation: As part of the facilities available at Centre 47 we offer other agencies working with young people office accommodation. Currently the following occupy these office facilities:
CASS – Cumbria Action for Social Support – providing support and housing tenancies.
Oaklea Trust – Working with unemployed people with disabilities.
DISC – Providing Entry to Employment for 16-18 age group.
