Managing Agents Salterbeck Recycling project

Centre 47

Is a place where young people want to come to and where they leave with a positive sense of achievement.  It provides support, personal development, training and employment opportunities tailored to their individual needs.  It plays its part to ensure that all young people have the chance to be responsible and fulfilled individuals.

Carlisle is Cumbria’s regional centre.  There are some thriving areas of the city but also some pockets of severe disadvantage with high levels of unemployment and disaffection among young people.  Most of Cumbria’s temporary hostel accommodation for young people is situated in Carlisle .  Whilst there is good provision of supported housing, training & employment and many young people feel marginalized.

We are working with young people and in conjunctions with lots of associations to achieve our aims:-

Impact Housing; Carlisle City Council,; Cumbria Careers; Carlisle College; Enterprise Cumbria; CASS, Employment Service, Social Services, BTCV, Cumbria County Council and Cumbria Waste Management.

Achievements: During 1999/2000 we have worked with 72 young people providing support & guidance.

Training:  This varies depending on individual needs from basic life skills – health & safety – first aid and customer care to wider ranges of technical training in Business Studies, IT and many other areas.

Employment:   there are activities to guide and support people seeking employment with job search.  We have workshops, working with recycling projects, and also workshops/office space and support on site to help young people develop their own businesses.  We also network with local businesses to find employment.  During 1999/2000, 30 young people moved from Centre 47 into employment.

Housing:  During 2000 we have constructed 10 flats completed in October 2000 and occupied by young people supported by non-residential staff.  Residents can stay for a maximum of three years preparing for total independent living and employment.  They will have made a clear commitment to taking part in Centre 47’s activities.  This project also links into supported accommodation across the city.

The Centre encompasses expanding recycling projects which include, furniture, computers, cookers etc, these are refurbish and made available to people on low incomes.

Impact Housing Association is leading the initiative with support from Carlisle City Council.  The centre is based close to the city centre in Nelson Street, Denton Holme and linked to rural communities.

Future projects include: I.T. Rooms, Cafe, Meeting Rooms, Training Rooms, Workshops for New Projects and more!!
