Grand opening at Impact Furniture Services Carlisle site Recycled Betty

Flanked by staff members Paul Gillan and Steven Little, “Recycled Betty” – made from bits of old tumble driers, washing machines and cookers – greeted visitors to Cumbria Furniture Services first Saturday opening (28th April) of their Carlisle site at Centre 47, Nelson Street.

Cumbria Furniture Services, which is part of the charitable Impact Housing Association Group, collects and resells good quality donated furniture, providing a low cost service to its tenants and the general public from its 3 sites in Carlisle, Penrith and Ulverston. It collects around 30,000 pieces of furniture a year, recycling about 20,000 items and saving about 600 tonnes of material from going to landfill. It also collects and repairs electrical goods with the help of trainees carrying out work placements in the community.

The Centre 47 site in Carlisle decided to have a party to mark the occasion, with music, a BBQ, bouncy castle, prize draws, face-painting and food provided by the on-site Hub-bub café.

Project Co-ordinator Lynsey Buckle said, “we were delighted with the response to our first Saturday opening and party. Many people who’d like to use our recycled
furniture service can’t makeit through the week, so Impact staff, tenants and volunteers all chipped to make it a great atmosphere for the many first time visitors and regulars.”

Cumbria Furniture Services will now continue to open on Saturdays

10.00am–2.00pm at 47 Nelson Street Carlisle, as well as 8.30am–4.30pm Mondays to Thurdays and 8.30am-4.00pm Fridays.
