Impact Furniture Services

Latest Information - Workington Store Now Open!
As with all IFS projects we welcome, and rely on donations of reusable goods from the general public, and collect items free of charge provided they are suitable and comply with all fire and safety regulations. All items will then be on sale to local people at affordable prices. Although mainly concentrating on domestic donations, IFS also accepts commercial, office and business (especially hotel, B&B) furniture and can carry out house clearances.
Items are displayed at reasonable and affordable prices in the modern warehouse at Derwent Howe, South Workington, round the corner from Morrisons. Items are available for sale to any member of the public, but priority will always be given to those most in need in the area. Furniture and household goods can also be made available to those in difficulty or crisis via referral from a variety of agencies and partners.
Since 1995 IFS has met the local need for quality recycled furniture from our Carlisle base, but demand has been such that it’s time for the West Coast to have it’s own project. Initially it will run as a pilot, to assess demand for its services and to allow it to be modified, responding to local needs and the input of the communities it serves. If the project takes off as expected, it will be established on a permanent basis in 2009.
IFS–West Coast has already been given a flying start by Impact Housing staff with their assistance in making vital contacts with our tenants – Thankyou! During this pilot stage we intend to work hard with local communities and organisations to develop our service.
The project will also host a number of placement opportunities from job creation schemes, which will provide valuable experience to local people, particularly the young or excluded. We are also looking for volunteers seeking work experience, or just wanting to do something valuable in the community. There are opportunities to work in the office, out on the van, or in the warehouse sorting out stock or selling to the public.
Background
“IFS” was established in 1995 and has developed into a large recycling business providing training and employment in furniture recycling, bikes, computers and white goods. IFS has recently obtained funding from the CRED Programme to help support the programme
Location
Our main sales outlet is in Carlisle, however we have other outlets, one in Penrith, Ulverston and now Workington. All sites have good parking facilities.
Buying Goods
We sell good quality second hand furniture and household goods at reasonable prices. The furniture is for those in need, people referred to the project and also for retail customers. Our aim is to help people acquire affordable furnishing for their homes, thus enhancing their quality of life. The warehouse opening hours can be found overleaf. All items can be delivered by arrangement.
Donating goodsYou can donate any household items that you no longer require. It can be anything that can be used to furnish a home such as three piece suites, beds and other furnishings, but it must be fire retardant. These items can be collected free of charge from the local area. As well as helping people in need it benefits the environment by reusing household items that would otherwise go to landfill sites.
White Goods
We have developed an Electrical/White goods project in conjunction with Carlisle City Council, and with our support they will collect electrical items as part of their bulky waste household collections in the Carlisle area. A special new van funded by DEFRA will bring the white goods back to CFS Carlisle, and we test/repair those that can be reused. The project has been set up in conjunction with the new government legislation WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) which is to prevent this type of waste going to landfill sites.
